Just in case I was misunderstood…

I am a bit concerned that some of my readers misconstrued my account of the traffic fine incident in my previous post. Just to set the record straight – I do not in any way condone disobeying the law. On the contrary, I feel very strongly that we as South African citizens cannot moan about the array of horrific crimes that affect us daily, if we commit crimes (however minor they may seem) as well. We can’t moan about our house being burgled if we speed, drive through a red light or download music from the internet. Whatever way we wish to justify it, it is wrong. The law is the law – like it or not. So, there you have it. I am no saint I will admit, but I do try and do the correct, ethical and lawful thing. When I was in my ‘yoga’ space it all felt so much easier though! In this particular incident I really did feel I was in the right, (otherwise I would have just paid the fine), but was astounded at how easily the system lets one off.  Judging by Sumayah’s comment though, this isn’t always the case (sorry Suma – hope things all get worked out). I chose to write about my experience for this reason and certainly never meant to encourage anyone into lawless ways or to support the acts of those who already try and dodge the law. Anyway just thought I would clear things up.  Hope I did.

Let’s not become too PC. Rowland received a fine of R1000-00 for speeding around Richmond during our Bloem roadtrip. He stuck to the speed limit the whole trip, using speed control most of the way. the fine was for doing 80 in a 60k zone ?? we don’t know where that was. So sometimes I feel we’re justified in criticising the system when it appears to have been set up to make money, not save lives.

Hm.. I definitely didn’t read into your post that you were encouraging anyone to break the law. I think your last line was an attempt at relaying how ridiculous the situation is. Just adding my two cents…

ps yes i finally have my computer back so i am now only catching up on all the blogs… very slowly but surely
