I have just listened to the Killers’ song, “Human’, in the car and every time I hear that song I feel irritated. I love(d) the Killers’ music and that particular song has a nice tune, but the words irritate me. You see, I love music – most types of music. But even more than the tune/beat/rhythm etc, I love lyrics. I am one of the few people who actually listen to the lyrics and take meaning from them. I analyse them I guess, much like you would a poem, as often that is exactly what they are. I know many of you reading this blog do the same and therefore hopefully, can associate. So, along comes a lazy or dazed and confused lyric writer who puts in words that don’t make sense just so that they can rhyme and in my opinion, in the process, ruins the song. In what could be a great song, Brandon Flowers sings, “Are we human, or are we dancer” DANCER???? Yes, I have thought about the intended symbolism, blah, blah, blah. But quite frankly it makes no sense and it friggin irritates me. Even, dancers would sound better. Ok, I have had my rant. What do you think?
Is it just me?

I liked the Killer’s older stuff. Maybe dancer was a childhood alien or horse that he is singing about??
Well I thought it was dancers, but neither make any sense so yes, I’m with you all the way.
I love to analyse and always listen more to lyrics then tune as well. At school I used to sit at the tape recorder and pause after each line so I could write it – I ended up having a very thick file full of song lyrics!! Wonder what happened to that.
Like you, I loved The Killers when they first came out – now I feel they have sold out and am not enjoying any of the new stuff least of all this latest one.. it’s just boring and as you say – it makes no bloody sense!!!!!!
well I dont do the lyrics thing I am awful. i either love it or i dont , however I live with a music mad lyric following person who is not keen on the new killers after being a HUGE fan . So I assume you are on to something. I do however think , and I am just throwing this out there, that a woman who is so close to giving birth as you are has a much higher chance of being ” friggin irritated” that ” we are dancer” does not make sense. LOL
xx
I love lyrics but sometimes they don’t make much sense, I even find that I’ll listen to a song for a few months (the radio stations don’t like to let go of a song) and suddenly understand a word that’s been bugging me.Dancer is one of them, wierd.
I can just picture little Purple Ronnie writing down the words to her favourite songs and belting them out later.
Ahh, yes…
agmm….(**clears throat**)
He is making a comparison of sorts. He is asking, are we humas (emotional, with free will) or are we dancer(s) (orchestrated, choreographed, puppets – hence “cut the chord”). His hands are cold (lifeless, like a puppet).
So, in essence, are you acting from real emotion or are you just responding the way you have been programmed to. When you see an open door, “cut the cord”, clear your heart and act from your heart.
xoxoxoxox
oh, and, think of it like this:
What are we made of… human or dancer. That’s why it’s dancer not dancers.
I think it’s meant to be an adjective? as in “we all have some human and some dancer in us. but we must decide if we are human or dancer”?
Hell, I just love the song.
This song is on the radio now… stupid f*^king song. The only reason I see that he chose ‘dancer’ is because it rhymes with ‘answer’ in the next line. Still… makes NO sense.
Personally i don’t really listen to the lyrics of a song. I follow the melody… so whether they are singing about purple donkeys in a meadow or a broken heart it’s still the same thing to me.
i am well known for making up my own words when singing a song.
Confession: my lyrics for the killers song is: are we just human or are we dancing…
