The 2nd Scan

by Caroline on February 19, 2007

On Friday we went for our second scan of the baby. It was so amazing to see this little thing moving around. It stretched out its legs and brought its arm to its face. We also saw it drink some fluid and then excrete it! My gynae was very thorough and checked all my babies limbs, organs and even counted each finger. She measured the neck for Down’s and today I went for my blood tests so that we can have the Down’s test finalized. Everything is looking good so far. My baby is now 7cm (it has done a lot of growing in 1 month!) and weighs 70grams. The due date has been adjusted again and looks more likely to be the 24th of August. The heartbeat was 160 which is considered fairly high and an indication the baby may be a girl. Also my gynae clearly thinks it is a girl as there is no sign of any significant male appendage in the genital area. It is however, still TOO EARLY to tell, so all of you in the girl camp, can not celebrate just yet. I still think it will be a boy, although my only wish is for a healthy baby. I really would be happy with either. When you have to have all these other tests done, it really does put things in perspective.

We have a DVD of the scan (much to Craig’s excitement) and I have already watched it twice since Friday! Still can’t believe it is moving around inside me and I can’t feel a thing. Such a weird concept. Also the front view of the baby is rather scary – a bit alien-like really, as the eyes are still far apart and the face is a strange shape. My dad watched the DVD and has decided he thinks the process of scanning with the way they prod the baby to get it to move, is cruel. I am sure it is worse for the mother than the baby though, especially when your bladder is full…

After the scan Craig and I decided to go to Willowbridge to buy something for the baby. We have realized that neither of us has yet bought anything, so it was all very exciting. We went to a shop called Love Affair, which has the most stunning things. Unfortunately for us everything was either for a boy(blue with ships or trains) or for a girl (pink with butterflies and fairies on it). Very disappointing. It has made me want to know the sex now. What we did find though was a beautiful Sleigh Cot, just like what we want, all for an amazing R8800!!! My God. I had thought the cot I saw in one of the pregnancy magazines for R5000 was expensive. I clearly have been out of touch with the cost of baby things.

My next scan is on the 16th of March and we will know for certain what the sex is then. Can’t wait…
